But, you need to know one thing first: There are 2 kinds of the interface in WordPress as “classic editor” and “Gutenberg”. The movements in the 2 these interface are quite different, so I’ve separated them into 2 parts for instruction.

How to create an image gallery / album in WordPress with “classic editor”

Step 1: Pick up images for the album

Look up the button “Add media” and press it.

You can add captions for each image, choose which layout, size,... to show images in the right bar. After that, click “Insert gallery” to add this album to the post.

That’s done. Save the post and take the preview.

I made it with some demo image as below:

In the classic editor of WordPress, you will meet some disadvantages as below when you create any gallery:

  1. The image will be open in a different page without any navigation to view other images. You must come back to post and click to view another. It’s quite inconvenient!
  2. It’s not fully responsive
  3. It does not automatically crop your images in some layouts
  4. It’s depended on the theme and almost albums will have the same style.

However, if you are using Gutenberg, you will not meet the 3 first points. Let’s do it with Gutenberg now!

Step 3: Setup the album

Now, you will come back to the post editor but there is a beautiful album already. If you don’t want to change it, do nothing. If you want to change anything, click the album. You can add or remove any image, or change the layout by adjusting information at the right bar.

Finally, save your post and you get all done.

As my own opinion, the gallery created on Gutenberg is more beautiful, but not much option for layouts. However, you can view full image with navigation to view next / previous image also view all of them in a popup up which you can close to continue reading the post without loading any page. It’s more convenient.

So, you know how to have an amazing image album in your post now. If you want to have more layout for the album, try some WordPress plugins for the gallery.
